What is a homophobic/transphobic incident?
Any incident which is perceived to be homophobic/trans-phobic by the victim or other person. This can includeany acts of violence,harassment or verbal abuse towards members of the LGBT community. If these crimes are not reported, those criminals who target the LGBT community will remain free to commit further crimes.
LAGLOs
Lesbian and Gay Liaison Officers (LAGLOs) are police officersand police staff who have special understanding of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Issues. Their role includes enhancing the relationship between the police and the LGBT communities to boost people's trust and confidence in coming forward to report homophobic and trans-phobic incidents.
What action will the police take?
Information provided to the police by victims and or witnesses will be treated sensitively and in confidence. All necessary steps will be taken to protect the identity of the person reporting the crime or providing information - sexual orientation or gender identity need not be disclosed. This process will ensure the anonymity of both the victim and those providing information. The police will record the information regardless of whether the victim supports any further action.
